Godzilla (Showa 1955–1975)

Following the complete disintegration of the 1954 Godzilla by the Oxygen Destroyer, Dr. Yamane's warning of another specimen came true in 1955.

Near the remote Iwato Island, pilots Shoichi Tsukioka and Koji Kobayashi witnessed a second prehistoric Godzilla engaged in a savage territorial brawl against the spiky quadruped Anguirus. Woken from millions of years of oceanic slumber by thermonuclear testing, this second Godzilla made landfall in Osaka, killed Anguirus in a brutal clash around Osaka Castle, and was subsequently lured to the snowbound Kamiko Island where JSDF air strikes triggered massive avalanches that entombed him in thousands of tons of ice.

Seven years later in 1962, an iceberg fractured, unleashing the thawed King of the Monsters to begin his historic two-decade tenure as Earth's foremost champion.

Over two decades, Showa Godzilla's physical representation evolved through legendary suit sculpts:

• GyakushuGoji (1955): Slimmer and more agile than the 1954 original, sporting sharp fangs and intense predatory pupils.
• KingGoji (1962): Heavy reptilian physique, broad maple-leaf dorsal fins, and an earless saurian snout tailored for brawling King Kong.
• MosuGoji (1964): Distinctively furrowed brow, fierce expressive eyes, and rhythmic swaying dorsal spines considered the zenith of his villainous era.
• SoshingekiGoji & MegaroGoji (1968–1975): Softer facial contours, large empathetic eyes, and a more upright posture embodying his role as a heroic protector of humanity.
• Dorsal Spines: Signature jagged maple-leaf dorsal fins that radiate bright cerulean blue luminescence prior to energy discharge.

Showa Godzilla developed remarkable emotional depth and battlefield intelligence:

• Alliance with Earth Titans: In Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster (1964), initially refusing to assist humanity due to past military hostility, Godzilla was moved by the selfless courage of the young Mothra larva, joining forces with Rodan to drive off King Ghidorah.

The transformation of Showa Godzilla from a terrifying nuclear specter into an inspiring national champion mirrored Japan's post-war trajectory during the Miracle Economic Growth era.

As the memory of wartime devastation receded, Toho and director Jun Fukuda reimagined Godzilla as an ally of youth, standing up for ecological conservation (against pollution in Hedorah) and defending the homeland from alien tyrants. Showa Godzilla remains an immortal cultural symbol of courage, friendship, and triumphant resilience.
