Rodan (Showa 1956–1972)

According to Dr. Kashiwagi's paleontological analysis in Rodan (1956), Rodan is a colossal irradiated relict of the prehistoric pterosaur genus Pteranodon, which ruled the skies over 70 million years ago during the Cretaceous period.

Clutches of giant eggs lay in cryogenic and geothermal suspension deep inside subterranean caverns underneath Mount Aso on Kyushu island. Modern deep-shaft coal mining at Kitamatsu, coupled with postwar Pacific thermonuclear tests, irradiated the geothermal strata, awakening the ravenous prehistoric dragonfly nymphs (Meganulon) that served as juvenile Rodan's first meal.

A mated pair of Rodans took flight, wreaking havoc across Asian airspace. In the emotional climax of the 1956 film, as military artillery triggered Mount Aso's eruption, the wounded female Rodan plunged into the incandescent molten lava. Incapable of living alone, the male Rodan dove deliberately into the flames beside her in one of world cinema's most famous tragic monster conclusions.

In 1964, a second Rodan specimen (or the miraculously heat-immune survivor) erupted from Mount Aso's slopes to forge a historic partnership with Earth's titans.

When Mothra's Shobijin pleaded for their aid against King Ghidorah, both titans obstinately refused, citing humanity's relentless hostility toward them.
• Chivalrous Awakening: Observing the diminutive Mothra larva courageously charging King Ghidorah alone shamed Rodan's conscience. He launched into the sky to intercept the cosmic dragon, turning the tide of war.
