Manda (Showa 1963–1968)

Manda's origins trace back twelve thousand years to the legendary civilization of the Mu Empire, which originally dominated a vast continent in the Pacific Ocean before cataclysmic seismic upheavals plunged it beneath the waves. Defying extinction, the Mu survivors established an advanced geothermal civilization on the ocean floor, revering Manda as their living protector deity and the sacred guardian of their oceanic sovereignty.

In 1963, when the Empress of Mu launched an offensive to reclaim dominion over the surface world, Manda was deployed into the abyssal trenches to intercept the ultimate hope of mankind: the Imperial Japanese super-submarine Gotengo (Atragon), commanded by Captain Juzo Jinguji.

By the late 20th century (the setting of 1968's Destroy All Monsters), Manda was safely contained and preserved on Monsterland in the Ogasawara archipelago, enjoying protected status alongside Earth's other giant titans.

Manda exhibits the regal, serpentine silhouette of a classical Eastern dragon (Ryū):

• 150-Meter Sinuous Body: An elongated serpentine physique measuring 5 meters in diameter, supported by four clawed reptilian limbs used for anchoring against coral reefs and deep-sea trenches.
• Turquoise Scales & Golden Belly Plates: Covered in iridescent deep-sea blue-green scales that shimmer in oceanic currents, contrasted by durable golden ventral plating built to endure benthic pressure.
• Regal Dragon Head & Antlers: A magnificent draconic head sporting golden amber eyes, a flowing crimson mane, and serpentine whiskers. Crowning its skull are a pair of formidable, bone-hard deer-like antlers.
• Dorsal Fin Ribbon: A continuous undulating crimson-orange dorsal fin ribbon running along the spine, providing hydraulic stabilization during rapid aquatic navigation.

• Unyielding Loyalty to Mu: In Atragon, Manda demonstrates ferocious fidelity to the Mu royalty, unflinchingly attacking the Gotengo's spinning drill to protect the capital.
• Mind-Controlled Weapon of War: Under the telepathic enslavement of the alien Kilaaks in Destroy All Monsters, Manda is forced into urban demolition, coiling around and destroying Tokyo's transit infrastructure.
• Docile Oceanic Resident: Free from external control on Monsterland, Manda displays gentle behavior, peacefully gliding through coastal lagoons without hostility toward caretakers.

Possessing a cold-blooded reptilian/draconic physiology, Manda is acutely vulnerable to freezing temperatures:

• When the Gotengo fired its Absolute Zero Cannon (Reitō Kōsen), the sub-zero beam froze Manda into a solid block of ice within seconds, completely arresting his muscular functions and sending him plunging helplessly into the ocean trench.

• Pioneering Marionette Wirework: Unlike suitmation kaiju, Manda was brought to life via an intricate 5-meter marionette puppet operated by complex overhead wire rigs in Eiji Tsuburaya's dedicated water tanks, creating remarkably fluid and authentic serpentine movement.
• Cultural Landmark: Manda remains one of the most culturally revered designs in Toho history, serving as the blueprint for sea dragons across anime, manga, and gaming.
