Manda (Showa 1963–1968)
Manda (Showa)
Showa Manda (海底竜 マンダ, Kaiteiryū Manda — The Undersea Dragon) stands as the quintessential embodiment of the Eastern mythological sea dragon within Toho's cinematic kaiju pantheon. Introduced in director Ishirō Honda and special effects maestro Eiji Tsuburaya's seafaring sci-fi masterpiece *Atragon* (1963 — *Kaitei Gunkan* / The Undersea Warship), Manda serves as the venerated guardian deity of the ancient sunken Mu Empire. Measuring an astonishing 150 meters in length and weighing 30,000 metric tons, Manda possesses a serpentine turquoise-scaled body, majestic stag-like horns, and fiery crimson whiskers. Dominating ocean currents at swimming speeds of 60 knots, Manda's most terrifying combat maneuver is his full-body Crushing Constriction, exerting thousands of tons of hydraulic pressure capable of warping the armored hull of the super-submarine Gotengo. Returning in the all-star ensemble *Destroy All Monsters* (1968), Manda found sanctuary on Monsterland, cementing his enduring legacy as one of the most visually stunning creatures in cinema history.
