Showa Varan (大怪獣バラン, Daikaijū Baran — revered as the mountain deity Baradagi-sama 婆羅陀巍山神) is one of the most distinctive and conceptually ambitious monsters in Toho's golden library, celebrated by the singular marketing mantle: **The Behemoth that Dominates Land, Sea, and Sky**. Debuting in director Ishirō Honda and special effects wizard Eiji Tsuburaya's 1958 classic *Varan the Unbelievable* (*Daikaijū Baran*), Varan is a prehistoric survivor of the Triassic *Varanopode* lineage sequestered for millions of years within the mist-laden Kitakami mountain river valley of Tohoku, Japan. Standing 50 meters tall and weighing 15,000 metric tons with mottled grey reptilian hide and a magnificent crown of white dorsal spines, Varan commands extraordinary versatility: diving into deep mountain lakes, charging overland, and unfurling leathery patagium flight membranes between its limbs to glide through storm clouds at Mach 1.5. Returning in the iconic ensemble *Destroy All Monsters* (1968), Varan enjoyed protected sanctuary on Monsterland, soaring triumphantly across the heavens during Earth's liberation.
