Sea Serpent (Showa)

The Sea Serpent of the Showa era (海蛇, Umihebi — Mondo Island Sea Serpent / Giant Sea Snake) is a fearsome prehistoric marine reptilian predator in Toho's tokusatsu lore, appearing in Ishirō Honda's classic 1967 adventure spectacle *King Kong Escapes* (*Kingu Kongu no Gyakushū*), featuring dynamic creature effects helmed by master Eiji Tsuburaya. Inhabiting the turquoise coastal reefs and shallow lagoons surrounding uncharted Mondo Island in the Java Sea, the Sea Serpent is a 20-meter-long, 500-ton aquatic reptile representing an evolutionary bridge between giant sea snakes and ancient marine serpents. When a United Nations research hovercraft carrying Commander Carl Nelson, Lieutenant Commander Jiro Nomura, and nurse Susan Watson explored the island's coastline, the aggressive serpent surfaced to devour the small vessel. Hearing Susan's terrified screams, King Kong bounded down the jungle mountainside, plunged into the surf, and wrestled the thrashing serpent to the death, snapping its spine and casting its broken body onto the coastal rocks.
