Sanda of the Showa era (褐色の巨人 サンダ, Kasshoku no Kyojin Sanda — The Brown Gargantua / Mountain Titan) is one of the most emotionally profound and tragic humanoid kaiju in the history of Toho cinema, starring as the noble titular protagonist in Ishirō Honda’s 1966 tokusatsu masterpiece *The War of the Gargantuas* (Japanese: フランケンシュタインの怪獣 サンダ対ガイラ, *Furankenshutain no Kaijū: Sanda tai Gaira*), with legendary special effects directed by Eiji Tsuburaya. Regenerated from severed cellular tissue discarded by the immortal Frankenstein titan following his cataclysmic demise near Lake Biwa, Sanda was discovered as an orphaned infant humanoid and lovingly raised in a Kyoto research laboratory by Dr. Paul Stewart and assistant Akemi Togawa (played by iconic Toho starlet Kumi Mizuno). Escaping into the secluded alpine forests of Mount Shirane, Sanda matured into a 30-meter-tall, 15,000-metric-ton colossus clad in shaggy reddish-brown fur, retaining full human empathy, an herbivorous diet, and an enduring instinct to protect humankind. When his feral green aquatic clone-brother Gaira assaulted Tokyo and began devouring civilians, Sanda intervened to protect Akemi, tending to his brother's wounds before turning against Gaira upon discovering his irredeemable cannibalism. Their brutal fratricidal brawl tore through the capital and into Tokyo Bay, where an undersea volcanic eruption consumed both brothers in molten magma.
