Meganulon of the Showa era (古代トンボ幼虫 メガヌロン, Kodai Tonbo Yōchū Meganuron — Ancient Dragonfly Nymph Meganulon) is one of the most authentically terrifying, claustrophobic, and ecologically grounded insectoid kaiju in Toho's tokusatsu history, debuting in the studio’s first color kaiju production *Rodan* (1956 — 空の大怪獣 ラドン, *Sora no Daikaijū Radon* / Giant Monster of the Sky Radon), directed by master Ishirō Honda with special effects helmed by Eiji Tsuburaya. Awakened from millions of years of suspended animation within the deep, flooded shafts of the Kitamatsu coal mine beneath the volcanic slopes of Mount Aso in Kyushu, Meganulon is the colossal nymph stage of the prehistoric giant dragonfly *Meganeura* from the Carboniferous period. Measuring 8 meters long and weighing 1 metric ton, protected by a bulletproof chitinous carapace and armed with razor-sharp serrated pincer forelimbs, Meganulon butchered isolated miners and police officers, plunging the surrounding community into paranoid dread. Yet when subterranean tremors collapsed the mine shafts into a vast prehistoric cavern beneath Mount Aso, the menacing insect swarm was revealed to occupy the bottom of the prehistoric food chain—devoured alive as the first meal for the newly hatched pterosaur titan Rodan.
