Megalon (Showa 1973)
Megalon (Showa)
Showa Megalon (昆虫怪獣 メガロ, Konchū Kaijū Megaro — The Insect Monster) stands as one of the most mechanically inventive and visually striking kaiju villains of Toho's golden era. Introduced in director Jun Fukuda's action-packed spectacle *Godzilla vs. Megalon* (1973), Megalon is the divine subterranean protector of Seatopia—an ancient undersea human civilization driven to war after surface nuclear tests provoked devastating earthquakes across their sunken metropolis. Embodying the wrath of the subterranean depths, this towering 40,000-ton bipedal rhinoceros beetle titan is encased in impenetrable black and gold chitinous plate armor. Equipped with conical steel drill appendages for hands that combine into a high-RPM mega-drill, a golden horned crest capable of hurling jagged lightning bolts, and an internal bio-reactor spitting explosive napalm bombs, Megalon shattered the Kurobe Dam and clashed with Godzilla and Jet Jaguar in a legendary battle for terrestrial supremacy.
Megalon (Gemstone)
Megalon (Gemstone)
Megalon (Gemstone) (メガロ) is the resurrected subterranean insectoid guardian deity featured in the official 3D CGI short film *Godzilla vs. Megalon*, released on November 3, 2023, at Godzilla Fest 2023. Directed, written, and visualized by VFX auteur Takuya Uenishi under the Toho GEMSTONE Creative Label, this production commemorates the 50th anniversary of *Godzilla vs. Megalon* (1973–2023) and serves as the direct sequel to *Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex* (2022). Evolving past the campy aesthetic of the 1973 Showa suit, the Gemstone incarnation emerges as a ferocious, agile, and aerially dominant subterranean kaiju. Designer Uenishi drew heavy inspiration from Battra (1992), incorporating multifaceted ruby compound eyes and heavily armored obsidian-and-amber chitin plates. Reawakened within a subterranean Seatopian temple through crimson energy siphoned from the remains of Gigan Rex, Megalon is commanded by an enigmatic Seatopian priestess bearing an inscribed talisman. Equipped with rotating helical drill gauntlets, Megalon tunnels through solid bedrock at supersonic velocities and can merge his forearms into a singular colossal boring cone. For ranged bombardments, Megalon discharges volatile geothermal napalm orbs from his mandibles and fires blinding golden bio-electric arcs from his jagged rhinoceros horn that paralyze Godzilla's nervous system. His aerial acrobatics, dynamic dive-bombs, and rapid repositioning showcase a masterclass in modern kaiju combat before confronting Godzilla's retaliatory atomic heat ray.
