Mechani-Kong of the Showa era (電子怪獣 メカニコング, Denshi Kaijū Mekanikongu — Electronic Monster Mechani-Kong) is the historic first robotic doppelgänger kaiju produced by Toho Studios, debuting as the titular mechanical antagonist in the 1967 Japanese-American co-production *King Kong Escapes* (Japanese: キングコングの逆襲, *Kingu Kongu no Gyakushū*), directed by Ishirō Honda with groundbreaking special effects directed by Eiji Tsuburaya. Engineered by the international criminal mastermind Dr. Who with clandestine financial backing from Madame Piranha, Mechani-Kong was built as a 20-meter-tall, 15,000-metric-ton mechanical replica of King Kong sheathed in riveted armor plating. Originally designed to excavate the lethal radioactive mineral known as "Element X" beneath the North Pole ice cap, the initial unit (Mechani-Kong I) suffered electromagnetic circuit meltdown. After the real King Kong escaped Dr. Who’s clutches and made landfall in Tokyo, the upgraded Mechani-Kong II was unleashed, fitted with blinding ocular searchlights and a belt of flash grenades. The climactic duel culminated along the girders of the Tokyo Tower, where Mechani-Kong scaled the structure with hostage Susan Watson before losing remote transmission, hurtling hundreds of feet to the pavement below and shattering into scrap. Mechani-Kong stands as a monumental milestone in tokusatsu history, serving as the direct architectural predecessor to Mechagodzilla (1974).
