Kroiga (Showa)
Kroiga (Showa)
Kroiga of the Showa era (有翼獅子怪獣 クロイガ, Yūyoku Shishi Kaijū Kuroiga — Winged Lion Monster Kroiga / The Griffon) is one of the most uniquely conceived, psychologically tragic, and biologically anomalous chimera kaiju in Toho's cinematic canon, premiering in Ishirō Honda's 1969 international sci-fi adventure co-production *Latitude Zero* (*Ido Zero Daisakusen*), with visual effects supervised by master Eiji Tsuburaya. Engineered within the subterranean volcanic laboratories of the megalomaniacal Dr. Malic on Blood Rock island, Kroiga is a cybernetically modified biological chimera created by surgically splicing the muscular frame of a wild lion with the colossal feathered wings of a giant South American condor. To craft the ultimate aerial assassin capable of destroying Captain Craig McKenzie’s super-submarine *Alpha*, Malic subjected his traitorous mistress Lucretia to surgical vivisection, transplanting her living human brain into the beast's cranium. Spanning 50 meters in wingspan and weighing 1,500 metric tons, Kroiga dominated the oceanic skies before her lingering human memories shattered Malic's neural control, resulting in a fateful final act of vengeance.
