Kamacuras (Showa)

Showa Kamacuras (カマキラス, Kamakirasu — designated as Gimantis in American releases) is the quintessential radiation-mutated giant insect of Toho's golden Showa era. Introduced in director Jun Fukuda's tropical island feature *Son of Godzilla* (1967 — *Kaijūtō no Kessen: Gojira no Musuko*) featuring groundbreaking wire-operated puppet effects by Sadamasa Arikawa and Eiji Tsuburaya, Kamacuras originally lived as ordinary mantises native to secluded Solgell Island. When a United Nations radioactive weather-control experiment malfunctioned, runaway radiation and extreme heat caused the insects to mutate into monstrous 50-meter, 2,800-ton apex predators with 90-meter wingspans. Armed with razor-sharp serrated raptorial scythes and adaptive camouflage, a trio of Kamacuras excavated the gargantuan egg containing Minilla, mercilessly tormenting the newborn infant until the wrathful Godzilla intervened. Returning in *All Monsters Attack* (1969), Kamacuras served as a menacing classroom-bully allegory on Monster Island, providing the crucible through which Minilla learned to defend himself.
