Gotengo (Showa)

Gotengo of the Showa era (海底軍艦 轟天号, Kaitei Gunkan Gōtengō — Undersea Warship Gotengo / Atragon) stands as one of the most celebrated, influential, and magnificent sci-fi mecha warships in cinematic history, debuting in Ishirō Honda’s 1963 widescreen spectacle *Atragon* (*Kaitei Gunkan*), featuring breathtaking miniature engineering directed by special effects maestro Eiji Tsuburaya. Constructed in absolute secrecy upon an uncharted South Pacific atoll by the genius Imperial Japanese Navy Captain Hachiro Jinguji, Gotengo is a revolutionary tri-medium armored battlecruiser capable of seamless combat operations across air (flying at Mach 2), sea (diving to oceanic abysses), and earth (burrowing through solid bedrock). Measuring 150 meters long and weighing 10,000 metric tons of reinforced alloy armor, Gotengo is armed with a massive rotating bowsprit excavator drill and the devastating Absolute Zero Cryogenic Cannon, which projects a super-cold beam chilling matter to -273.15°C. When the ancient subterranean Mu Empire threatened planetary subjugation with their guardian dragon Manda, Gotengo intervened, freezing Manda solid and penetrating the heart of the undersea empire to preserve human civilization.

Gotengo (Final Wars)

The Gotengo (轟天号 — translated historically as the Undersea Warship or Atragon) in *Godzilla: Final Wars* (2004) is the pinnacle of human superweapon engineering developed by the Earth Defense Force (EDF). Commanded by the stalwart, cigar-chomping Captain Douglas Gordon, the New Gotengo emerges as humanity's sole surviving combat vessel following the global onslaught of the extraterrestrial Xilien armada. A hybrid dreadnought capable of subterranean excavation, deep-sea subaquatic navigation, and supersonic atmospheric flight at speeds exceeding Mach 3, the Gotengo is defined by its massive rotating chrome **Mammoth Bow Drill** mounted on its prow. The warship executes the audacious polar sortie to Antarctica (Area G) to resurrect Godzilla from his glacial tomb, guides the King of the Monsters across his global gauntlet, and breaches the armored hull of the Xilien Mothership, turning the tide of the intergalactic invasion.
