Gigan (Showa 1972–1973)
Gigan (Showa)
Showa Gigan (サイボーグ怪獣 ガイガン, Saibōgu Kaiju Gaigan — The Cybernetic Monster) stands as one of the most vicious, sadistic, and iconically designed kaiju villains in Toho cinematic history. Making his historic debut in director Jun Fukuda's *Godzilla vs. Gigan* (1972) and returning in *Godzilla vs. Megalon* (1973), Gigan achieved instant infamy as the very first monster on screen to slice through Godzilla's impenetrable hide and draw copious amounts of blood. Engineered by the insidious cockroach aliens of the M Space Hunter Nebula, Gigan is a terrifying bionic synthesis of an extraterrestrial predatory avian reptile and heavy industrial military hardware. Bristling with a terrifying chest buzzsaw that grinds opponents at high RPMs, curved hammer-claw scythes in place of hands, a crimson ocular visor, and triple dorsal sails granting Mach 3 atmospheric flight, Gigan waged ruthless wars of terror across Earth alongside King Ghidorah and Megalon.
Gigan (Final Wars 2004)
Gigan (Final Wars)
Gigan from *Godzilla: Final Wars* (2004 — designated by collectors and tokusatsu fans as Millennium Gigan or Modified Gigan) represents one of the most celebrated and radical visual reinventions in kaiju history, brought to screen by action director Ryuhei Kitamura. Conceptualized by legendary designer Yasushi Nirasawa, Gigan sheds the gaudy golden-green scales of the 1970s Showa era in favor of a sleek, menacing midnight-blue and polished chrome biomechanical exoskeleton dominated by a glowing ruby horizontal visor. Unearthed as a 12,000-year-old mummified cyborg fossil that once terrorized ancient Earth, Gigan is reanimated by the extraterrestrial Xiliens as their premier vanguard. After having his head cleanly obliterated by Godzilla's atomic ray in Antarctica, Gigan is retrieved and rebuilt into **Modified Gigan** (改造ガイガン) — outfitting his severed forearms with dual double-bladed **Bloody Chainsaws**, heavily reinforcing his armored neck collar, and deploying guided razor discs to engage in a ferocious citywide war against Godzilla and Mothra over the burning ruins of Tokyo.
Gigan Rex
Gigan Rex
Gigan Rex (ガイガンレクス) is the supreme mechanoid kaiju commander featured in the official 3D CGI short film *Godzilla vs. Gigan Rex*, released on November 3, 2022, at Godzilla Fest 2022 in celebration of Gigan's 50th anniversary (1972–2022). Directed by acclaimed visual artist Takuya Uenishi under the Toho Gemstone initiative, this incarnation introduces an apex evolutionary step for the cybernetic conqueror. Diverging from previous incarnations that relied upon abdominal rotary buzzsaws, Gigan Rex showcases an imposing metallic maroon and burnished bronze carapace, crowned by a violet-luminescent crest and crimson optical visor. In place of a belly saw, Gigan Rex features an expandable chest beam aperture capable of projecting the cataclysmic **Rex Plasma (レクスプラズマ)** energy ray. His forearms mount the versatile **Rex Blades (レクスブレード)**, which seamlessly transition between rigid defensive parrying swords capable of deflecting atomic breath and segmented blade-whips capable of bisecting entire city blocks. Gigan Rex commands an extraterrestrial invasion force of mass-produced vanguard cyborgs designated **Gigan Miles (ガイガンミロス)**. Transmitting telepathic orders through his forehead crest, Rex coordinates swarm dive-bombs and commands the Miles to deploy their extended buzzsaws. In his climactic showdown against Godzilla, Rex telekinetically extracts the vital cores of surviving Gigan Miles, orbiting them around his extended Rex Blades to unleash a maximum-output Rex Plasma beam. The conflict culminates when Godzilla achieves a supercharged white-hot nuclear state, overpowering the plasma ray and annihilating Gigan Rex in a monumental explosion.
