Frankenstein (Showa)
Frankenstein (Showa)
Frankenstein of the Showa era (奇怪な巨人 フランケンシュタイン, Kikai na Kyojin Furankenshutain — Strange Giant Frankenstein / The Hiroshima Giant) is one of the most poignant, tragic, and genuinely humane kaiju figures in Toho's tokusatsu pantheon, debuting in Ishirō Honda's 1965 masterpiece *Frankenstein vs. Baragon* (*Frankenstein Conquers the World*), featuring spectacular special effects directed by master Eiji Tsuburaya. Unlike prehistoric reptiles or gigantic insects spawned by atomic testing, Frankenstein is a synthetic humanoid regenerated from the immortal, beating heart of Frankenstein's monster, transferred from Nazi Germany to Hiroshima in the waning days of World War II. Irradiated by the atomic bombing of August 6, 1945, the heart regenerated into a feral orphan boy before undergoing rapid gigantism into a muscular 20-meter titan. Though hunted and falsely accused by human society for the predatory rampages of the subterranean beast Baragon, Frankenstein retained an innocent devotion to his human caretaker Dr. Yuko Togami. In a ferocious battle at the foot of Mount Fuji, Frankenstein broke Baragon's neck to protect the humans, only to be swallowed into the subterranean abyss by a sudden tectonic earthquake.
