Dogora (Showa)

Dogora of the Showa era (宇宙大怪獣 ドゴラ, Uchū Daikaijū Dogora — Space Giant Monster Dogora / The Celestial Space Jellyfish) is one of the most abstract, imaginative, and visually groundbreaking non-humanoid kaiju in Toho's tokusatsu pantheon, making its legendary debut in Ishirō Honda's 1964 sci-fi classic *Dogora, the Space Monster* (*Uchū Daikaijū Dogora*), featuring revolutionary special effects orchestrated by master Eiji Tsuburaya. Breaking radically away from traditional suitmation monsters, Dogora is an extraterrestrial single-celled amoebic organism that underwent hyper-accelerated mutation when exposed to Earth's high-intensity Van Allen radiation belt. Coalescing in the upper atmosphere into a gigantic, semi-translucent, bioluminescent jellyfish spanning 100 meters, Dogora is driven by an insatiable hunger for raw carbon atoms. Descending upon industrial northern Kyushu, the cosmic organism plunders coal mines, industrial diamond vaults, and cargo vessels, unleashing supernatural anti-gravity vacuum vortexes that tear apart the colossal Wakato Suspension Bridge. When conventional military artillery and missiles merely cause Dogora to undergo asexual mitosis into thousands of independent entities, scientists uncover its singular biological vulnerability: chemical compounds derived from wasp venom that petrify its fluid tissues into brittle stone.
