Showa Baragon (地底怪獣 バラゴン, Chitei Kaijū Baragon — The Subterranean Monster) is one of the most charming, expressive, and structurally celebrated prehistoric kaiju in Toho's golden pantheon. Introduced in director Ishirō Honda's acclaimed 1965 sci-fi monster classic *Frankenstein vs. Baragon* (*Frankenstein Conquers the World*) and returning in the legendary epic *Destroy All Monsters* (1968), Baragon is a surviving Mesozoic reptilian subterranean creature adapted to subterranean volcanic caverns. Standing 25 meters tall and weighing 250 metric tons, Baragon maneuvers on all fours with remarkable agility, utilizing foldable ears to shield his sensory organs during subterranean tunneling, a brilliant amber-glowing nasal horn that acts as an underground searchlight, and a devastating Magma Heat Ray capable of melting rock and incinerating barricades. From his fierce woodland clash against Frankenstein to his peaceful sanctuary life on Monsterland, Baragon remains a timeless cornerstone of classic tokusatsu history.
